Hill and Mountain Skills Scheme

Hill & Mountain Skills

The Hill & Mountain Skills courses that we run for Mountain Training are your key to getting started in hill and mountain walking. These courses are aimed at beginners, so you don’t need any previous experience of hill or mountain walking to attend. If you’d like to start your own walking adventures but aren’t confident about planning walks, navigating and understanding the equipment required, then these courses are for you.

On all of our courses we offer a friendly, sociable, experienced, supportive learning environment.

HILL & MOUNTAIN SKILLS – WHAT'S COVERED?
Planning– how to successfully plan a hill or mountain walk in the UK or Ireland.
Walking skills– what things should you consider while out walking and what can make life easier (pace, nutrition, movement skills, etc).
Clothing and equipment– being suitably dressed and equipped can make the difference between a great day out and a complete disaster.
Weather– how it affects the hills and your day out.
Navigation – everything from selecting a compass to navigation strategies and an intro to GPS.
Environmental knowledge– how to minimise your impact on the hill and information on good practice and useful organisations.
Hazards and emergency procedures in the hills– how to respond to any hazards you encounter and what to do in an emergency.

Our courses take place over two days (about eight hours each day). These are practical courses, and after an initial introduction, the days are spent outside, with plenty of learning opportunities. But don’t worry – the pace of the day is relaxed and there'll be plenty of breaks!

WHICH COURSE SHOULD I CHOOSE?

The main difference between the Hill Skills and the Mountain Skills is the kind of terrain that we cover on each course. The Hill Skills course is most suitable for someone who wants to learn the skills to explore moorland and hills in the UK, such as the lower fells of the Lake District, Dartmoor, the Howgill Fells, Yorkshire Dales, or the Pentland Hills. The Mountain Skills course is ideal for those who want to learn the skills to be able to undertake their own walks in more mountainous terrain, where there may be additional hazards such as rocky ground, scree slopes, and rivers. This includes mountain regions such as Snowdonia, the Lake District, and the Scottish Highlands.
