Walking the Wainwrights

Walking the Wainwrights, with Graham Uney Mountaineering.

Walking holidays and short breaks.

We've had a lot of requests from readers of Graham's guidebook, Walking the Wainwrights, asking if we run weekend breaks and longer holidays, focusing on the Wainwrights.

Well, now we do!

These holidays are a simple way to meet up with follow Wainwright baggers, and to enjoy the hills with a qualified and experienced guide from the Graham Uney Mountaineering team.

Each holiday is based around a town or village, or perhaps a couple of different locations for the longer holidays, giving you the freedom to select your own accommodation. Each location will have a range of B&Bs, guesthouses, a hotel or two, and a campsite, and some will have a youth hostel or bunkhouse too, giving you the choice of where to stay. Most days we'll just walk directly from the place we're staying, but if not we'll use buses or boats on the lakes where possible, or perhaps car share if we want to travel somewhere more remote, or further afield.

There's no fixed programme for any of these holidays - we simply go out into the hills with the intention of enjoying Walking the Wainwrights. The weather will dictate where we go to some extent, but we can guide you as a group on any of the Wainwrights, and we'll be open to suggestions from the group too, as to where you'd like to go.

All you will pay us for this is a 'guiding fee' per person.

So check out what the dates are for our Walking the Wainwrights holidays and short break in 2024 and 2025, then get in touch to book yourselves in. Group bookings are also very welcome, and if there's more than four of you we might be able to accommodate you on dates other than those advertised too!

£350 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum 12)

Based in Glenridding, we'll head out every day during the week, with the intention of bagging every single Wainwright in the Pictorial Guide Book One - The Eastern Fells. That's 35 Wainwrights spread over seven days. Quite a challenge for anyone, but with our knowledge of the Wainwrights we think it's doable, with some effort! There'll be long days and shorter days, but all days will be memorable, and you could finish the week with one book completed! We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

These might include High Street, Mardale Ill Bell, Harter Fell, Kidsty Pike, High Raise, Rampsgill Head, Branstree, Selside Pike, Wether Hill, Loadpot Hill, Bonscale Pike and Arthur's Pike. There are so many Wainwrights within easy reach of Keswick, we couldn't list them all here, but we may tackle Skiddaw, Great Gable, Glaramara, Scafell Pike, Catbells, The Coledale Horseshoe, Eagle Crag, and the Newlands Round. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

£100 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum 12).

Based in Keswick, we'll have a chat over a beer on the Friday night, then spend Saturday and Sunday out on the local fells. The late autumn months are a fabulous time to be in the hills, and there are so many in this area for us to choose from. We could head up Walla Crag and Bleaberry Fell, or Causey Pike and Scar Crags, High Spy and Castle Crags give another great option. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Grasmere Weekend, January 3rd - 5th 2025 (2 days walking)

£100 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum 12).

Based in Grasmere, this is a great way to start 2025! We'll meet for a chat over a beer on the Friday night, then head out into the hills on Saturday and Sunday. The January weather will dictate where we'll go, but there are lots of options from the high fells such as Helvellyn and Fairfield, to the lower but no less lovely Wainwrights such as Loughrigg, Silver Howe, Helm Crag, or Tarn Crag. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Buttermere Weekend, March 21st - 23rd 2025 (2 days walking)

£100 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

Based in Buttermere, after a chat over a beer the night before, on the Saturday we hope to head out onto one of the classic ridge traverses of the Lake District, either Red Pike to High Crag or Dale Head to Robinson, leaving something like Haystacks and Fleetwith Pike, or perhaps the Loweswater Fells for the Sunday. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Grasmere Weekend, April 4th - 6th 2025 (2 days walking)

£100 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

Another great walking weekend in Grasmere. After a chat over beer on Friday, we'll aim to head up onto High Raise, Sergeant Man, and Blea Rigg on the Saturday, and maybe on the Sunday we'll take in the Helm Crag to Calf Crag ridge and round to Steel Fell. If the weather's not conducive to going onto the high fells there are plenty of lower Wainwrights to keep us busy. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Langdale Weekend, May 23rd - 25th 2025 (2 days walking)

£100 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

Based in Langdale, we'll make a plan for the weekend over a beer on the Friday night. On Saturday if the weather's good we'll head up onto Crinkle Crags, Bowfell, and Esk Pike, leaving the Langdale Pikes for the Sunday, but there are plenty of low-level Wainwrights too. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Far Eastern Fells Week, June 8th - 15th 2025 (7 days of walking)

£350 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum 12)

Another week in the fells, this time attempting to do all of the Wainwrights in the Far Eastern fells, from Pictorial Guide Book Two. We'll be based initially in the Haweswater area, but will then move round to Glenridding to give us the best possible chance of bagging all 36 Wainwrights in this fabulous region. We're sure you'll enjoy the challenge, and we should know - these fells are in our own back yard! We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Coniston Weekend, June 27th - 29th 2025 (2 days walking)

£100 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

Based in Coniston, after a planning session on the Friday night we'll aim to head for the heights of Dow Crag, Brim Fell and Coniston Old Man on the Saturday, and perhaps Swirl How, Grey Friar, Great Carrs and Wetherlam on the Sunday. Bad weather options include Black Crag and Holme Fell, so there's something for everyone in this great walking area. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Duddon Valley Weekend, July 11th -13th 2025 (2 days walking)

£100 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

After a meet up at the Newfield Inn on Friday night for a chat over a drink, our options for Saturday and Sunday include Dow Crag, Coniston Old Man, Brim Fell and Grey Friar from 'the back', or perhaps Cold Pike, Crinkle Crags and Bow Fell from Cockley Beck. Harter Fell and Green Crag are also well worth a look, and are surprisingly rocky smaller fells. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Central Fells Week, July 20th - 27th 2025 (7 days walking)

£350 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

A week spent trying to climb all 27 Wainwrights in the Central Fells. We'll base ourselves in Keswick for the first part of the week, then move to Langdale to finish off. The Central Fells give us some of the best-known Wainwrights, including the Langdale Pikes and Helm Crag, but also some hidden gems like Eagle Crag, Ullscarf, and High Rigg. It's a challenge to do them all in a week, but we have good plans in place! We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Eskdale Weekend, August 15th - 17th 2025 (2 days walking)

£100 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

Based in Eskdale, we hope to take on the challenge of Scafell Pike, Scafell and Slight Side - a big walk in a very remote part of the Lake District, but well worth doing if the weather is good. Other great options include Whin Rigg and Illgill Head - the summits above the Wasdale Screes, and we can have a quick walk up Hardknott as well if there's time. Harter Fell and Green Crag also make a great walk from Eskdale, so there are good options. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Southern Fells Week, August 24th - 31st 2025 (7 days walking)

£350 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

Another challenging week, this time attempting to climb all of the 30 Wainwrights in the Southern Fells. These include Glaramara, Bow Fell, Coniston Old Man, and of course Scafell Pike and Scafell. Logistics for these walks dictate that we'll need to move around a bit, from Borrowdale to Langdale, to Coniston, and then to Wasdale to complete them all in a week, but it's a superb challenge. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Northern Fells Week, September 7th - 14th 2025 (7 days walking)

£350 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

For this fabulous week of Wainwright bagging we'll base ourselves in Keswick and head out each day from there. The Northern Fells include the classics of Skiddaw and Blencathra, but these are also relatively quiet fells, away from the crowds, and during the week we'll attempt to climb all 24 Wainwrights in the area. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Wasdale Weekend, September 19th - 21st 2025 (2 days walking)

£100 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

A fabulous weekend among our highest mountains. Based at Wasdale Head we have a huge range of possible walk options to bag Wainwrights, from Scafell Pike and Great End, to Great Gable and Kirk Fell. One of the best longer walks in the area is the Mosedale Horseshoe, but there are great shorter options too, including Middle Fell, Seat Allan, and Buckbarrow. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Glenridding Weekend, October 3rd - 5th 2025 (2 days walking)

£100 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

So many great walk choices spring to mind when we think of Glenridding as a base. After a chat on the Friday night we'll head out into the hills on Saturday and Sunday. Helvellyn is an obvious choice, as is The Dodds, Fairfield and the Deepdale Horseshoe, or Place Fell and Angletarn Pikes. For lower level options Gowbarrow, Great Mell Fell and Little Mell Fell take some beating too. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Loweswater Weekend, November 28th - 30th 2025 (2 days walking)

£100 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

A great range of lower fells for us to explore on this autumn weekend. From the Loweswater area we could enjoy days out on Mellbreak, Hen Comb, Gavel Fell, Blake Fell and Burnbank Fell, or go the other side of the lake onto Low Fell and Fellbarrow. Other options include the Whinlatter Fells, or the Grasmoor group if the weather is favourable. We'll make plans in the pub on the Friday night, then enjoy two days walking the Wainwrights. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.

Walking the Wainwrights - Hesket Newmarket Weekend, December 12th - 14th 2025 (2 days walking)

£100 per person (minimum of 4 needed, maximum of 12).

These hills 'Back o' Skiddaw' are a superb destination for a walking break at any time of year, but this pre-Christmas get-together promises to be special. After a meet up in the Old Crown in Hesket Newmarket on the Friday, we'll have plans in place to get us out into the fells. Perhaps Carrock Fell and High Pike, or up onto Great Sca Fell via Longland's or Brae Fell. Other options include Bowscale Fell and Bannerdale Crags, or Blencatha. We'll send you a list of recommended places to stay when you book.
