Winter Skills for Mountain Walkers in Scotland

Winter Skills Courses for Mountain Walkers - Scotland

Why not join Graham Uney for a winter skills day in the Scottish Highlands, and if you choose we can follow this with a second day to put all your newly-learned skills into practice on one of the Scottish Munros. We'll aim to go through the basic techniques of winter walking, including the use of winter boots, the ice axe, and crampons on day one, then book as many addition days as you wish so we can head for the heights of and bag Munro summits.

You'll need your own winter mountaineering boots (we'd recommend boots rated B2, that are stiff enough to take a crampon), as well as winter clothing, goggles, hat and gloves, and a packed lunch. If you have your own ice axe and crampons you can of course use those, but we can hire these to you for £20 if you haven't bought them yet, or if you're not sure of the best ones to buy. When you book we'll send you a kit list along with your booking confirmation and joining instructions.

We meet at 9am and will aim to be out on the hills for a full day, finishing around 5pm.

If we happen to not get great snow and ice conditions we'll have a fun scrambling day instead, so all is not lost! You should aim to be very flexible in your expectations though, as some days the conditions are great for crampon technique, but not so good for ice axe arrest, and vice versa. We'll tailor the skills taught to the conditions on the day.

Dates:

These courses are offered as bespoke days throughout the 2025 winter season, from January through until the end of March. There are no fixed dates. Get yourself together with a friend or small group and we'll agree a date between us.

Where do we do these courses?

For this winter season we're going to be moving around throughout the Highlands to enjoy different mountain ranges. So, if you have somewhere in particular in mind just let us know. Otherwise, we're most likely to be available in either the Braemar, Aviemore, Glencoe, Fort William, or Kintail areas.

Cost:

The cost is £120* per person per day in the Scottish winter hills (minimum of 2 people required, maximum of 4 clients).
