Scrambling Skills

Scrambling Skills

Learning the skills to tackle scrambles of all grades can really open up the mountains for you.

We offer a bespoke skills instruction course to suit you and where you want to go.

This could be just gaining confidence in moving on rock so that you can tackle some of our classic Grade 1 scrambles such as Striding Edge, Jack's Rake, Sharp Edge, Crib Goch, Y Gribin, Bristley Ridge, or the North Ridge of Tryfan, or it could be that you aspire to explore the harder scrambles such as Pinnacle Ridge, Pillar Rock, Ledge Route, the Aonach Eagach, Curved Ridge, or even the Black Cuillin traverse. These scrambles are best undertaken by those with some basic mountaineering equipment and skills. And that is the essence of scrambling safely - knowing when it's OK to scramble unroped, understanding when to rope up, and if you do get the rope out, knowing how and when to move together, how to pitch sections, and of course, how to descend too.

On our bespoke courses we look at all of these points. We'll teach you about the safety equipment, and how to use it. These skills aren't learned easily though, unless you already have some rock climbing skills and knowledge. We recommend that for hillwalkers looking at getting into scrambling for the first time, they book a five-day course, whereas for rock climbers wanting to transfer their skills from graded climbs to scrambling terrain a one-day course might suffice.
