Rock Skills Intermediate

Rock Skills Intermediate

Mountain Training Rock Skills courses provide a progressive introduction to the basic skills and techniques of rock climbing, which will help you stay safe, enjoy climbing to the full and provide the foundation required for participation and development of your own rock climbing activites.

The main aims of our Rock Skills Intermediate course are to learn how to be a safe belayer, how to second routes competently, and how to belay a lead climber. You'll have fun developing your climbing movement skills and learn how to place protection and build belay anchors.

Climbing Experience Required

To take part in the Rock Skills Intermediate course you should have either:

  • Completed a Rock Skills Introduction course
  • Have logged 10 climbs on indoor walls or outdoor crag, and belayed a fellow climber 10 times.

During this two-day course we'll cover the following:

  • Background and Planning
  • Climbing Skills
  • Footwear and Equipment
  • Technical Skills
  • Environmental Knowledge
  • Hazards and Emergency Procedures

And by the end of our Rock Skills Intermediate course you can expect to:

  • Have covered the course content in a safe and enjoyable outdoor environment and classroom-style setting
  • Have climbed outside for the majority of each day, at two different accessible crags
  • Be in a strong position to second a lead climber on rock climbs and participate safely

A progression from this course could involve gaining further experience as a second by climbing with friends or joining a club. This may then take you on to participating in a Rock Skills Learn to Lead course.

The crags we choose will depend on the weather a fair bit, but we could go into Patterdale, Borrowdale, Thirlmere, the Eden Valley, or the Northern Fells.
