The Herriot Way

The Herriot Way - a four-day guided walking holiday in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Herriot Way is a 52 (84 km) walk through two of the loveliest of Yorkshire's Dales. Its inspiration is a walk taken by the famous vet, James Herriot and it takes the walker on a circular route around Wensleydale and Swaledale, and over one of Yorkshire's highest hills - Great Shunner Fell - as well as the open heather moors around Grinton. There's lots to see every stage of the way, so you'll have an interesting and enjoyable time being guided by the Graham Uney team.

The Herriot Way can be started anywhere around the circuit, but for our guided walking holiday we've decided to base ourselves in the village of Hawes for all four nights. This is an unusual way to walk a long distance route, but as the walk is circular it's pretty easy to return to the same place each night, and this means that you can relax each evening without worrying about having to vacate a B&B or hotel each day. It also makes it easier for you to choose your own accommodation - there are lots of options in Hawes (including hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses, hostels, and a campsite), and we'll send you a list when you book. We'll also book a minibus taxi to deal with the logistics of getting us around each day, and we'll share the cost of this between us.

Outline Itinerary:

Day 1. We'll meet in the evening in Hawes for an introduction to each other and your fellow Herriot Way walkers. We'll have a chat through the next day's walk over a beer.

Day 2. We'll walk over Great Shunner Fell to Keld, crossing from Wensleydale into Swaledale, 12.5 miles (20 km), then catch a taxi back to to Hawes.

Day 3. Our taxi will take us to Keld, from where we'll walk via the Gunnerside Lead Mines above Swaledale to the village of Reeth, 11 miles (18km), then catch a taxi back to Hawes.

Day 4. Back in Reeth (via taxi) we'll head up onto the open moors at Grinton, crossing these to drop back into Wensleydale at Castle Bolton. We follow paths up the valley to Aysgarth and it's famous waterfalls, 14 miles (23 km), before catching our lift back to Hawes.

Day 5. From Aysgarth (reached via taxi) we'll walk through the beautiful village of Askrigg (where the TV series James Herriot was filmed) then onto the Hardraw Force waterfall before finishing in Hawes, 12 miles (19 km).

You may plan to depart for home at the end of Day 5, or you could book a 5th night at your accommodation in Hawes, and travel home the next day.

Holiday Dates

September 8th - 12th 2024 - arriving on the evening of September 8th, and finishing the walk on September 12th.

September 28th - October 2nd 2025 - arriving on the evening of September 28th, and finishing the walk on October 2nd.

Holiday Cost

You only pay Graham Uney Mountaineering a 'guiding fee', this is £245 per person.

This fee covers the guiding services of Graham Uney or one of his guiding team during the dates set out above.

It does not include accommodation in Hawes - we think you prefer it if you choose your own level of accommodation, and book this yourselves. However, we will send you a list of accommodation options to help you choose.

It also doesn't include the private taxi service we use each day. This will be pre-booked by your guide, and the cost will depend on how many of our guests are on the walking holiday. The most you should budget for this is £57.50 in total, but if we have more than 4 guests (maximum of 8) it will be cheaper than this.

Booking

To book just drop us an email on grahamuneymountaineering@gmail.com and we'll send you a booking form. Once that's returned to us with payment we'll send you joining instructions of where and when to meet, a kit list, and a range of selected accommodation options in Hawes.
